The Learning Paths Approach

A process improvement approach to training that dramatically speeds up time to performance

About Learning Paths

Learning Paths is a systematic methodology for reducing time to proficiency. Reducing the time it takes to get employees up-to-speed has a direct and measurable impact on turnover, employee morale and profits. Delays in reaching proficient levels of performance can lead to high error rates and lost customers.

The Business Case for Learning Paths

Every minute employees are less than 100% proficient has a significant and measurable financial effect in terms of lower productivity, increased errors, fewer accidents, poor quality, lower sales and lost customers. That’s why Learning Paths focuses on reducing time to proficiency in order to deliver results.

The Three Principles of Learning Paths

The Learning Path Metholodology is driven by three key learning principles. First, learning is a process and not an event. Learning goes well beyond what happens in the classroom. Second, knowing and doing are not the same thing. Third, training should be by design, not by accident.

Developing a Learning Path

The first step in developing a Learning Path is to define and measure proficiency. The second step is to map out the current Learning Path or how training is done today and then apply the principles of change management, accelerated learning and process improvement to drive down time, waste and variability.

Defining & Measuring Proficiency

Proficiency is a measure of performance. The start of every Learning Path initiative begins with defining proficiency and measuring current time to proficiency. This enables directing all learning activities to acheive the goal of becoming proficient in the least amount of time possible.

Mapping & Accelerating Learning Paths

A Learning Path is the series of learning activities that go from day one to proficiency. These activities include formal training, practice, experience and more. A Learning Path initiative maps out the current Learning Path and then applies the best of accelerated learning and change management.
